Caribbean Stud Poker Strategy
Caribbean stud is a five-card stud game played on a blackjack-style table using a standard 52-card deck. The object is to beat the dealer with the best hand.
Each seat at the table features a player's layout and chip slot. Before any cards are dealt, you place a bet in the "ante" box.
With each hand you may also play for the progressive jackpot. To play, place a chip in the chip slot. A small light will appear when the chip has fallen through for collection. Keep an eye on the lights to make sure your bet is indicated, before the hand is dealt.
The dealer then deals five cards, face down, to each player and deals five cards to himself, one of which is face up. It is now time for the players to look at their hand and decide whether to fold or play on. If you fold, you lose your ante, if you play on, you must place double the amount of your ante in the “bet” box. This is your “call” bet.
After all the players have chosen their course of action, the dealer reveals his four “hole” cards. If he has an A with a K or higher hand, he qualifies to compete with the players. If he does not qualify with the, he pays all of the player’s even money on their ante bets. If the dealer qualifies, he then compares his hand to each of the players' hands. If the dealer's hand is higher, the player loses both the ante and call bets. If the player's hand is higher than the dealer's, then the player wins even money on the ante and the bonus amount on the call.
If the player made a jackpot bet and has a flush or higher, the player receives payment for the hand. When players are eligible for jackpot payouts they must announce their jackpot hand to the dealer before the hand is over. The progressive jackpot bet is a separate side game and the player wins regardless of whether they beat the dealer or not.
Like any table game, there are some basic strategies to consider before playing the Caribbean stud. While luck plays a role, it’s worth nothing without decisive decision making on the part of the player. To be decisive, you must understand your odds and some basic play strategies.
Odds
The following is a list of possible hands and the approximate odds:
- No hand at all – 1:2
- One pair – 1:2
- Two Pair – 1:21
- Three of a Kind – 1:47
- Straight – 1:256
- Flush – 1:526
- Full House – 1:694
- Four of a Kind – 1:4167
- Straight Flush – 1:72,202
- Royal Flush – 1:649,351
Based on these numbers, fold if you have nothing or a low single pair. Remember, the dealer is subject to the same odds listed above. Stay in the game when you have two pair or better.
As for the progressive bet, it may be better to opt out unless you are feeling particularly lucky or not afraid to lose a few dollars. However, if you play for the jackpot with every hand, your chances of winning money overall, will be diminished.
